The Historic Environment: Policy & Practice is a journal for all those that investigate, conserve and manage the historic environment.
The journal forms essential reading for all archaeological practitioners, and those involved in building conservation - contractors, consultants, curators, researchers, students and fieldworkers - both professional and voluntary. The journal cuts across organisational divisions to identify themes which are of concern and interest to all practitioners.
The print run is held in the Library. The journal is also available online via Oxford e-Journals and will also be findable on SOLO within the next fortnight

Scanning
- Colour copies
- A3 printing
- Self-service online accounts
- Discounted double-sided
- Printing from laptops
To use the new system, you will need to set up an online account at https://bodleian.pcounterwebpay.com/, to which you can add credit using a credit or debit card. When you first come to use the photocopier, your University/Bodleian Libraries card can be linked to this account. Once linked, you will just need to swipe your card to pick up print jobs and access copying and scanning. If you have a Rewley House Continuing Education Library card without a magnetic strip, please ask Library staff.
For more information on prices, and for guides to the new system, please see http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/services/copy
What will happen to credit on my existing photocopy card?
If you use other libraries, you may have one of the existing copy cards with credit remaining. Once you have set up an account, library staff can transfer credit from the old system to your new account. Simply set up an account and present your old card to library staff in any of the libraries that used the old card system, eg Bodleian, Sackler, History Faculty, English Faculty etc. They will need your PCAS username to complete the transaction. Please note that Rewley House Continuing Education Library staff will be unable to do this.

Change to wireless services
To access OULS-Reader, you need the barcode number on your University card or Rewley House Continuing Education Library card, and the associated password. This is the same password that is used to access your record on OLIS, renew books, place stack requests and log in to PCs in the Library. If you are unsure of your password, please ask at the Library desk.
OULS-Reader does not require the use of any other passwords or software and is therefore available to anyone with a current University card or membership of the Rewley House Continuing Education Library, this includes students on weekly classes and summer school students. The Bodleian Libraries website has more information about OULS-Reader.
Please note:
- OULS-Reader is only available in the vicinity of the Reading Room. OWL and Eduroam are available in other areas of rewley House, and also at Ewert House
- If you currently use OWL or Eduroam, you can continue to do so, although you may find OULS-Reader more straightforward.

Film lists - new on the Library website
The collection has been developed over mamy years, so we have more videos than DVDs. Some films are recorded from TV under the Educational Recording Agency (ERA) licensing scheme and therefore may be of inferior quality.
Four lists are available:
- Films by Title
- Films by Director
- Subset of Title list showing DVDs only
- Subset of Director list showing DVDs only
The first two lists indicate whether each recording is video or DVD, and ERA or commercial.
Films may be borrowed by staff and students of the Department for Continuing Education, and by other students studying film courses or options.
The website also has a list of documentary videos and DVDs, and drama productions and serialisations (mainly BBC)

New website for Local Historians
You may be interested in the following free website which was launched this week and is hosted by the History Faculty: Oxfordshire History (http://oxfordshirehistory.modhist.ox.ac.uk/).
This site is a guide and reference source for researchers and potential researchers into Oxfordshire’s history, archaeology, landscape and buildings. It aims to provide concise support and guidance on use of the mass of published accounts and raw materials concerning Oxfordshire’s past. The site offers an historical framework and sequences of information and ideas, from which selected links, downloadable texts, and suggested reading, contacts and activities are designed to enable users to go on to further and more detailed investigations of their choice.
The site has been planned as a successor to ‘Oxfordshire: a handbook for students of local history’, edited by Molly Barratt and David Vaisey (1973). (Available in the Rewley House Continuing Education Library)
The website adds emphasis on archaeology, buildings and landscape is intended to widen and integrate the approach to Oxfordshire history. Listings of contacts, organisations, projects, events and publications will be regularly updated, and new content can be developed. Coverage refers to the present-day county of Oxfordshire, i.e. the historic county established c. 1007 plus the Vale of White Horse, transferred from Berkshire in the local government re-organisations of 1974.
It is listed on OxLIP+ under History > Local history and on the Rewley House Continuing Education Library website
New resources: Illustrated London News
This resource provides researchers with access to 150 years of British social history, fashion, theatre, media, literature, advertising, graphic design and politics, as well as those interested in genealogy. With its debut in 14 May 1842, the ILN became the world’s first fully illustrated weekly newspaper, marking a revolution in journalism and news reporting. The publication presented a vivid picture of British and world events – including news of war, disaster, ceremonies, the arts and science – with coverage in the first issue ranging from the Great Fire of Hamburg to Queen Victoria’s fancy dress ball at Buckingham Palace.
Each page has been digitally reproduced in full colour and every article and caption is full-text searchable with hit-term highlighting and links to corresponding illustrations. Facsimiles of articles and illustrations can be viewed, printed and saved either individually or in the context of the page in which they appear. Wherever possible, Special Numbers covering special events such as coronations or royal funerals have been included.
The popularity of the ILN attracted great artists and draughtsmen to cover wars, royal events, scientific invention, and exploration. In 1855 it launched the world’s first colour supplement. Over the years the publication played host to many distinguished writers.
Access is via OxLIP+. Use SSO for remote access.
A demonstration of the ILN will take place on Thurs. 29 April, 12:30-13:30, Lecture Theatre, History Faculty, George Street. Simply turn up. All are welcome!

Changes to Library PCs
Why?
PCs will be upgarded with new applications and you will be able to save files to the desktop. The change is also required to comply with University IT regulations
How do I log in?
You log on using the barcode number on your University/Library card and the password you use for accessing your record on OLIS, to reserve or renew books, or making stack requests.
If you have a card with your photo, the password is usually your date of birth in the format 25mar2010 - you may have changed this.
If you have a Continuing Education Library card (no photo) your password will be the same as the barcode unless you have changed it. If it is the same as the barcode, it will need resetting, please ask staff.
I'm in a hurry!
We have one Sun Ray (networked terminal) which does not require you to log in
How can I find out more?
See the Reader FAQ guide, also available in the Library
How do I change my password?
See the Resetting your password guide, also available in the Library

Library name changes
Many of libraries are also changing their names. The Continuing Education Library becomes Rewley House Continuing Education Library. One practical implication of the change is that if you are used to limiting your search on SOLO to Continuing Education Library, you will have to scroll further down the list to select Rewley House Continuing Education Library (On the SOLO screen, click ‘All libraries/collections’ and select the library of your choice to restrict search results to holdings in that library)

Changes to Library PCs
If so, do you use other Oxford University libraries in addition to the Continuing Education Library?
If the answer is Yes, you need to be aware that over the next few weeks changes will be ataking place that require you to log into library PCs. Please note that this will not come into immediate effect in the Continuing Education Library. However it is expected that it will do so in the near future and we will inform you prior to the change.
Why this change?
Library PCs will provide access to new and updated software.
In addition, Oxford University libraries are being asked to comply with University IT regulations. These require that a reader can be identified, if necessary, when IT regulations have been broken, copyright infringed, or malware introduced.
Most libraries will have one or more 'Sun Ray' terminals where you can check SOLO or OxLIP+ without having to log in.
What do I need to do?
When you go into a library and use a PC you will be asked to authenticate yourself by logging in using a username and password.
This is the same username and password that you use to access your library borrowing record or place a stack request. These are sometimes referred to as your OLIS patron barcode and password.
What is my password?
The default password is your date of birth in the format 02dec1976
So an example login would be:
Username: 2715221 - the number above the barcode on your University card
Password: 02dec1976
Since receiving your card you may have already chosen to change your password to something of your own choice. If so, then you simply continue to use this password to login to Library PCs.
I changed my password to be the same as my barcode. Is that still ok?
No. If your password is currently set to be your barcode you will need to change your password. Acceptable passwords are either your date of birth or another password of your own choice but not a repeat of your barcode. This is a change from previous practice.
I can’t remember my password!
If your password doesn’t work, or you changed your password in the past but can no longer recall it, simply contact a member of library staff who will be able to reset it for you.
Need help changing your password?
You can change your password yourself or you can ask a member of library staff to change it for you. Instructions are available. Pick up a leaflet in the library, see the online guide Resetting your password or ask library staff who will be happy to help.
